# Publish your first post

> Once an article is approved, publish it to a connected destination now, as a draft there, or on a schedule. Or export it to post by hand.

To publish, open an approved article, pick a destination in the **Publishing** box, choose when, and confirm. Wavefront sends it, waits until the page is live, and checks the live page.

## Before you start

- **The version must be approved.** Publishing and scheduling accept approved versions only. See [review and approve](/help/getting-started/review-and-approve).
- **The workspace needs a destination.** An owner adds one under **Settings → Publishing**, for example WordPress, Webflow, Ghost or Shopify. See [connect a destination](/help/publishing/connect-a-destination). If there is none, the Publishing box says so, and owners get an **Add one** link.
- **You must be an owner or editor.** Viewers can't publish.

## Publish an approved article

1. Open the article and find **Publishing** in the side column.
2. Pick the destination.
3. Under **When**, choose one of the options the destination supports:
   - **Publish now**: the post goes live.
   - **Create a draft in** the destination: the post waits there for you to publish it yourself.
   - **On the calendar date**: for a post drafted from your calendar, at its planned time in the workspace's time zone.
   - **At a date and time**: pick a time.
4. Choose the publish button and confirm. The confirmation says which version goes where.
5. Status updates appear below as it moves through queued, sending, building and verifying, then published, draft created or scheduled.

Each publication shows its status, the live URL, and a **History** of every version sent to that destination.

## What Wavefront checks after publishing

Once a page is live, Wavefront loads it once and checks that it returns, shows the article's title, has a canonical tag and a meta description, has valid structured data, isn't marked noindex, and that its images load. Anything wrong shows as a warning on the publication. Warnings never undo a publish.

If the destination has IndexNow turned on, Wavefront also tells Bing and other engines that support it about the new URL.

## Publish a newer version later

When you approve a revision of something already published, the button reads **Update the published page**. The update keeps the same URL and slug, so search ranking carries over. See [schedule, update and withdraw](/help/publishing/schedule-update-and-withdraw).

## Sites Wavefront doesn't publish to

Every approved article has an **Export** box:

- **Copy as HTML**
- **Copy as Markdown**
- **Download (.zip)**: the article as HTML, Markdown and JSON, with its images.

Paste or upload it into any site. For copy and images, the **Use it** box has **Copy text** and **Download image**.

## Social posts and newsletters

Approved social copy and images can go to LinkedIn, X or other networks with **Post now** or **Schedule**. Newsletter copy creates a draft in Mailchimp, Kit or beehiiv and is never sent by Wavefront. Only a person in the web app posts to social networks. See [social posts and newsletters](/help/publishing/social-posts-and-newsletters).

## If something goes wrong

- **The publication failed.** The message says which step failed and why. Fix the cause, such as an expired token in the destination's settings, then publish again. See [common errors](/help/troubleshooting/common-errors).
- **The destination rejected the text.** Some destinations have their own limits. Request a revision that fixes the flagged text.
- **A publish is already running for that item.** Only one publish per item and destination runs at a time. Wait for it to finish.
- **You need to take a page down.** An owner chooses **Withdraw** on the publication. See [schedule, update and withdraw](/help/publishing/schedule-update-and-withdraw).
