Set the editorial mix for autopilot
The editorial mix decides which backlog idea fills each calendar slot, so formats, pillars and subjects rotate, deadlines are met and series stay in order.
Updated
The editorial mix is a strategy’s rule for which idea from the backlog takes each open calendar slot. It keeps the calendar varied, keeps timely ideas inside their windows, keeps a series in order, and still lets priority count. It only matters when autopilot fills the calendar from the backlog.
How autopilot picks an idea for a slot
For each open slot, in date order, autopilot looks at the open ideas allowed on that day and takes the one with the best score.
An idea is allowed when:
- it is valid on that date and not past its deadline;
- its title isn’t already on the calendar or published;
- it is the next part of its series, far enough from the previous part;
- the day suits any required weekday, and any weekly limit isn’t reached.
Its score adds up its priority, how far its format, pillar and other values are under their target share, urgency as its deadline or window closes, and a bonus on a preferred weekday. It loses points heavily when the same format, pillar, subject or keyword was used, or is planned, too recently.
Nothing is random. The same backlog, calendar and mix always produce the same calendar, and ties go to the idea earlier in the backlog. Past posts count: something published yesterday spaces the next slot as much as something planned for tomorrow.
See why each post was chosen
Every post autopilot adds records its strongest reasons, and the calendar shows them. For example: “Reviews under target: 5% vs 15%”, “list last used 4 days ago” or “due by 2026-12-01 (6 days left)”.
What the mix controls
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Preset | The playbook to start from | General |
| Window | The days either side of a slot that shares are counted over (7 to 120) | 28 days |
| Balance | Target shares for each value: even, in proportion to the backlog, or set shares | Pillars in proportion to the backlog |
| Spacing | Minimum days between two posts with the same value | Format 1, pillar 2, subject 21, keyword 60 |
| Weekly limits | The most posts with a value in a Monday-to-Sunday week | None |
| Weekdays | Preferred or required days for a value, such as reviews on Fridays | None |
| Lead days | How many days before a deadline a format should be out | None |
| Series gap | Days between two parts of a series | 7 |
| Priority | Weighted (one factor among the others) or strict (high, then normal, then low) | Weighted |
Spacing of 1 on format means no format two days running. Spacing of 21 on subject means three weeks between two posts about the same person, product or place. Ideas can also carry your own tags, such as funnel stage, persona or location, and the mix can balance and space those too.
Presets
| Preset | For |
|---|---|
| General | Any site: the defaults above |
| B2B SaaS | Funnel stages 50/30/20, personas and product areas evenly, at most two bottom-of-funnel posts a week |
| E-commerce | Product categories evenly, gift guides out well ahead of their dates |
| Local services | Service lines and locations evenly, a city at most once a week |
| Publisher and entertainment | Every pillar in turn, no format twice in a row, reviews preferred on Fridays |
| Newsletter | Beats evenly, the weekly digest only on Fridays |
| Docs and courses | Series parts in order a week apart, other posts in between |
Set or change the mix
The strategist proposes a preset when it builds a plan, adjusts it for your site, and says why. To change it:
- On Strategy, ask the strategist, for example “No more than two comparison posts a week” or “Space posts about the same city ten days apart”.
- Check the Editorial mix change in the reply.
- Save the plan. The mix applies once the plan is saved.
Agents and scripts can preview the next 30 days as autopilot would fill them, and rebalance autopilot’s undrafted posts with a new mix, through MCP or the API. A rebalance never touches a post that already has a draft.
Agencies and several clients
Each client workspace has its own strategies, and each strategy its own mix. Start each from the preset that fits the client, then adjust.
What the mix doesn’t change
The mix only decides when an idea goes out. It never changes what a draft says. An idea keeps its origin wherever the mix places it, so an idea an agent wrote never becomes eligible for auto-approve by being moved.
